Objects by Glithero

These pieces are stacks of three separate vessels. The hands depicted capture the interaction between the person and the object, describing the act of placing and composing.

In these compositions the vases are the photographs and the furniture is their frame.

Silvered Shelves

These furniture pieces explore the idea of photos as objects, and the act of framing as fundamental to the process of photography.

Return Amphoras

Alone, these amphoras are hopeless. They ask to be held, supported, propped up.

Silverware is a collection of porcelain vases with silver gelatin photograms of coastal seaweed. The images on the vases have been created using an original photographic technique. Seaweeds are temporarily attached to the surface of sensitised vases before being resolved within a beam of light.

Botanical Tiles

Botanical Tiles are architectural ceramic tiles that feature the silhouttes of weeds that have been foraged from around our London studio. After harvesting and pressing the specimen in flower presses, we compose them into designs that are hand scribed into the tile surface using the technique of sgraffito.

Les French Series 1

Les French is a series of furniture that embodies the value of the first impulsive sketch. In our studio we make spontaneous structures using bamboo and string, that are then cast in bronze. Using the lost material casting process the structures, that were once spontaneous and loose, become rigid and strong. We then set about creating ad-hoc cabinets, drawers or function surfaces that can be placed on top, coating them in layers of paper strips and durable lacquer.

Umbra Immortalis

Umbra Immortalis is a shell sculpture captured as a large format blueprint. A collaboration with artist Rowan Mersh, the image was made by exposing sensitised paper to light with the sculpture acting as a negative. This technique captures the sculpture in immense detail, depth and translucency.

Blueware vases is a collection of vases with cyanotype photograms of foraged weeds. The weeds are pressed in our herbarium before being captured on the vases using an original photographic process.

Fire Drawings are remnants of a performance acted out by a flame. We screen printed compositions of lines onto three wood canvases using a flammable paint, each starting at a single point before branching into multiple pathways. When lit, the flames burn along the path like a fuse, leaving a charcoal trail behind. Each choreography takes a different route but finishes with the same crescendo; a burning circle of fire.

Hold Me is a collection of vases with silver gelatin photograms. The hands depicted on the pieces are achieved using an original photographic process, whereby light-sensitive vases are revolved within a shard of light.

Les French Chair

Les French is a series of furniture that embodies the value of the first impulsive sketch. In our studio we make spontaneous structures using bamboo and string, that are then cast in bronze. Bench Mould Mirrors

Bench Mould mirrors are made using a method for running plaster cornices. The technique of making elliptical shapes using a trammel mould is described with almost mythical reverence by plasterers. A trammel mould is a slotted type of compass that allows you to draw an arc by moving the centre point as you go.

Domino light is a table light that is switched on using a rally of conductive copper dominos. When the domino rally falls an electrical circuit is completed which switches on the light. There is a ‘rocker’ domino in the base of the lamp to start the rally and a ‘receiver’ domino to mark where it finishes. Within the lamp there is a space to store dominos that are not in use. The dominos can be arranged in any configuration as long as the rally starts and finishes at the base of the lamp.

Botanical Rugs are hand-knotted rugs depicting flora from our own flower presses. We forage and preserve weeds before using them to make compositions, which are then woven into the rugs. This method of designing leads to a direct representation of nature rather than an embellished one. The subjects of the designs are represented exactly as they are found; roots, warts and all.

Paper Planes is a film which follows the production of a set of paper aeroplanes through a fine printing company. The project started after we visited the printer and were in awe of the processes, personalities, and skills that were the backdrop for the beautiful things that we saw being made.

Blueware tiles are ceramic tiles with cyanotype photograms of foraged weeds. We select flora from our herbarium to make intricate composition that are then captured onto photosensitive tiles using light. Symmetrical patterns are made by flipping the weeds over and exposing them to light from the other side.

Playing Cards is damask table linen set depicting a jacquard weaving book. The part that is usually the device for how the cloth is made, here becomes the subject of the design. It is a droste-like effect, where the product celebrates its’ own making.

Bench Mould Consoles

Bench Mould consoles are made using the process of running plaster cornices. We run intricate profiles through wet plaster to create console tops that sit upon sycamore frames. The consoles can be placed end to end to create varying lengths of furniture. We run the tops in our workshop and cast them in Jesmonite; A material much harder and denser than regular plaster with a marble-like finish.

Les French Wall Lights

Les French Standing Lights

Rubia Spectrum is an idea for upholstering furniture in fabric that has been dip dyed over a passage of time. The idea came from experimenting with dyeing techniques and finding joy in the intrinsic relationship between time and colour density. For this proof of concept, we dipped seven metre lengths of fabric into a tank of Rubia dye using a crane, before raising it at set intervals. The fabric was then used to upholster a three metre long sofa. We used the fabric in the same orientation that it was dipped, giving the impression that the itself sofa was hoisted out of the dye. Commissioned by Kvadrat.

Blueware Lampshades

Blueware lampshades are ceramic pendant lampshades with photograms of foraged weeds from our herbarium. We harvest and press the weeds at our studio before using them to create our designs. The flora are captured onto the surface of the lampshades using the cyanotype photographic technique.

Woven Song Tablecloths

These tablecloths are the result of what happens when you run organ music punch cards through a jacquard weaving loom. This collection is the centrepiece from our Woven Song exhibition, which explored the possibly of laying one craft discipline onto another. The translation was made by copying the code of an organ book into the format of a jacquard weaving book.

Woven Song Boogie Scarves

Boogie scarves is a set of woven scarves that mimic the organ music punch card of Count Basie’s Red Bank Boogie. The project is a playful reversal of input becoming output. Instead of being the code for driving an organ, the language of punched squares becomes a decorative motif of dashes and slots.
